There are also newer systems offering live chat over the Web, through Java applications, or through chat rooms on AOL or other proprietary online services. Running a Chat server on an existing intranet or extranet server allows companies to offer live interaction among employees and associates, and public chat areas let organizations host discussions across the Internet.
Web sites such as events.yahoo.com help you find live chats. Many are restricted to specific times and dates. Some occur on IRC channels, while others take advantage of the Web-based systems, and in fact a site like the Web Broadcasting Server (hwbs.net) offers continuous Web chat rooms on a variety of business and news topics. Still other Chat services are Java-based, with Java Chat clients handling the user input. An example of this is Talk.Com (www.talk.com), a service from the popular HotWired site.
